Our first meeting of 2012 saw a visit by Rex Freeman who
explained the benefits of growing old disgracefully, resulting in an active and
fulfilling life.His talk was
peppered with a range of jokes and anecdotes, forming a highly entertaining
event, and many of us felt a great deal younger by the end of the evening.
Unfortunately due to snow and ice, our February meeting was
cancelled.
We are very lucky to have Bradfield Woods in our local
area.At our March meeting, Judith
Metcalfe, Community and Education Officer for Suffolk Wildlife Trust, explained
the history of this National Nature Reserve, with its long standing practice of
coppicing and pollarding many ancient trees. The woodland soils are extremely varied, resulting in over
370 different plant species, along with numerous animals and birds.
In April we held a Beetle Drive, ably organised by Jane Gwatkin, and much enjoyed by all as confirmed by the continuous laughter throughout the evening.
At the beginning of May
around a dozen of us went for a walk in Bradfield Woods, a local ancient nature
reserve, where we saw numerous spring flowers and plants. We were very
fortunate that the rain that has poured down in the last month waited until we returned
to the car park before starting to fall yet again.
The May meeting saw us
vote unanimously in favour of the WI National Resolution that more midwives
should be trained and employed. We
then were treated to an insight into the work of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and
Families Association Forces Help, which caters for some 10 million people and
has support from around 8,000 volunteers.
